Geisha Secrets: A Pillow Book for Lovers

Though in part a brief education on the life and arts of the geisha, this book
is best understood as emulating what might have been the possession of a
geisha—an erotic pillowbook kept in the bedroom for lovers, or for times when a
lover was away. The book is elegantly constructed: a linen-covered, three-panel
portfolio with a peg closure, it contains erotic writings illustrated with
sexually explicit shunga paintings in an accordion-folded stack of pages, much
as shunga works were traditionally presented. The women in these paintings
however were not geisha but the prostitutes and courtesans of the pleasure
quarter, existing in a society with a largely guiltless attitude toward sex. An
introductory section, illustrated with modern watercolors, describes the
traditional role of the geisha herself, whose entertainments may have been
flirtatious but were not sexual.

"During much of the 1990s, there was a hidden voyeur in the strip clubs of the
East Coast tristate area: a stripper with a camera. A graduate of NYU's Tisch
School of the Arts and an assistant to Annie Leibovitz, Beasley danced and
stripped for $20 a lap. While trying to save up money, and avoid exhaustion and
arrest, she turned her camera on fellow dancers and the customers who paid for
them. More than 150 of her full-color photographs are gathered here.... Every
sort of awkward, lurid position people get into in strip clubs is unblinkingly
revealed in a brash layout of full-page photos, while occasional and commentary
by dancers, patrons or Beasley herself are moving and honest. Beasley notes
that many patrons were 'pleased with the role reversal, with being
objectified'—the kind of paradox that makes this book a luridly shrewd
pleasure."—Publishers Weekly

Thousands of young Asian women go to work in the sex industry, a marketplace
where any desire can be satisfied for a price despite the fact that many Asian
countries are repressive to the point of banning certain standard sexual
practices. For six years, Asian-American photographer Reagan Louie—a Guggenheim
and Fulbright fellow, with works in the collections of the San Francisco Museum
of Modern Art and New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art—journeyed through
this sexual underworld with his camera. The large color images here are frank
and often unguarded, revealing a wide range of emotional states in the faces
and body language of semi-clothed and nude women.

VARGA. Tom Robotham. 2004. JG Press. The Varga Girl is the eternal pinup--arrestingly beautiful, yet warm, innocent and approachable. Alberto Vargas' Varga Girl was introduced to the world in 1940 by Esquire magazine, and her charming image inspired troops during World War II.
Features 80 full-page full-color plates, including three two-page spreads. Very
well-reproduced images, primarily of the Esquire girls from the 1940s.
Page after page of lovely images follow a fine introduction that includes photos
of Vargas, his models and a variety of early paintings. Vargas employed
extraordinary technical skill with both watercolor and airbrush. Combined with
his stunning girls and provocative poses, this is the ultimate in seductive
cheesecake art. JG Press, 2004.

One of the greatest pieces of erotic literature, the Song of Songs, resides
within the Bible—a poetic book seemingly out of place, with a uniquely feminine
perspective. Its language is seductive, intimate, and intoxicating, describing
the voluptuous beauty of a woman and man madly in love with one another. But
the poem has also been described as a theology of human sexuality—the sensual
becomes implicitly spiritual; longing for one's lover hints at spiritual
longing. In this illustrated adaptation of the Song of Songs, Judith Ernst
renders it for a new generation of readers. While retaining much of the beloved
phrasing from the King James Bible, Ernst has made stylistic changes that give
the text a fresh and arresting charm. In addition, her twelve delicately
detailed gouache paintings of a woman longing for her lover graphically capture
the poem's moods of love. Between sections of the poem there is short,
thoughtful commentary to help readers understand ancient references in the
text.

Description
A brilliant fictional biography of the New Orleans photographer from the author
of Matisse's War. In 1912 in Storyville, the notorious red-light district of New
Orleans, a photographer named E.J. Bellocq took a series of photographs of the
women who worked in the brothels. Rediscovered in the 1950s, Bellocq's
photographs have become famous, but the man himself remains a mystery. With only
the photographs and a few fragmentary memories, Everett brings the photographer
to life - and with him his strange, tortured relationships with his mother and
two young girls, and the world he inhabited: the opium dens, the bar rooms and
the whore houses.
